eBay to Amazon: Making The Transition From Selling on eBay to Selling on Amazon
By Skip McGrath
My wife and I have been selling on eBay since 1999. In 2006 we added Amazon, but it never really took off for us. We had sales, but except for books, not that many. The same products we sold on eBay every day would sit on Amazon for weeks before they sold.
Then in 2010 we moved into Amazon’s FBA program. FBA stands for Fulfillment By Amazon. And since we started selling on FBA, our Amazon business now dwarfs our eBay business. We are now selling ten items on Amazon for each one we sell on eBay.
Please Note: This book was written for my US readers, but I checked with my British Daughter-in-law and she confirmed that AMAZON FBA works exactly the same way in the UK. The only difference you may see is that the fees are slightly different and, of course, in pounds --not dollars. But several of our British readers have purchased this book and been completely satisfied.
Why Sell on Amazon?
Amazon is now the largest –and fastest growing shopping site on the web. Amazon will not release their figures but anecdotal information and conversations I have had with Amazon employees lead me to believe there are just over 600,000 sellers on Amazon US. I have no idea how many are on the various overseas sites but I suspect it is substantial.
Most of the 600,000 sellers are casual sellers. I estimate there are about 50,000 active sellers –about the same as on eBay. You are probably thinking, “How can I compete with 50,000 sellers? Wouldn’t that make the site too crowded?” It’s strange but the number of sellers doesn’t seem to matter. I have spoken with large professional sellers who have been selling on Amazon for ten years and they all tell me their business goes up each year even as the numbers of other sellers grow. And I had that same experience.
Should I leave eBay?
No – We still sell on eBay and in some cases eBay is more profitable, but it doesn’t take that much effort to add Amazon. And as I will show you, having your products on Amazon can actually help your eBay sales.
Five Big Advantages of Amazon over eBay
More traffic and more sales ~ Amazon now gets more traffic than eBay and their sales are growing at over 40% per year. eBay has not seen that kind of growth since 2002.
Amazon does most of the work ~ When you sell an item on eBay you have to collect payment, post feedback, pack and ship the item and handle returns yourself. When you sell on Amazon, Amazon does all the work for you. They collect the money (and take the credit card risk), professionally pack and ship the goods and they handle returns for you.
Sell on eBay and Use Amazon as a drop shipper ~ When you store your products at Amazon, Amazon will actually ship products you sell on eBay to your eBay customers –and they ship for less money than it would cost you to ship the same thing so that actually makes you more competitive on eBay.
You make more money ~ I can’t guarantee this will be true for everyone, but every seller I have spoken with who sells on both eBay and Amazon, says they make more money on Amazon.
Seller Support ~ Seller support on Amazon is much more accessible than on eBay. Its quick and easy to email Amazon and if you want phone support during the day you can get an Amazon rep on the phone in usually less than one minute –and they will spend as much time on the phone as you need.
Skip – Aren’t selling fees are higher on Amazon?
Yes they are – but it doesn’t seem to matter, as you will still make more
money on Amazon because you will sell more. I know that sounds
counter-intuitive but it’s true.
